Fashion Friday: Ankle Pants

Spring is just around the corner.  At least, that's what I hear.  In Wyoming Spring doesn't officially start until mid-June.

But for the rest of you, spring is right around the corner.  I'd be jealous but I live in Wyoming.  Rolling prairies, the Tetons.  The Wind Rivers.  The Big Horns.  Open spaces, hot springs, abundant wild life.  I'll take that over your dreamy weather any day!  Well, except maybe on those really windy days when my car gets 3 MPG on my commute.

Anyhow, ankle pants are making a huge splash this spring and I'm pretty excited about it.  I got a cute pair of black ankle pants from Gap.  Love them!  Now, if you don't want to buy this new staple, consider hemming a pair of pants or rolling a pair of skinnies.  Either way, you'll be super trendy, comfy, and cute.

Things I Love: March Abness!

During February I kept seeing this "Fab Ab February" workout plan everywhere.

So I did something crazy.  I did it.  I addition to my regular workout schedule, I added extra planks, sit ups, and push ups.  It was amazing.  I loved it.

Lucky for me the creator of this awesomeness made another one for March.  Hello side planks, crunches, and pushups.

The crazy thing is how "slow" it starts.  I mean 14 crunches after rocking 100 sit ups?  Not even a challenge.  So I took it a bit further.  I don't start counting until I start feeling the burn (which means I'm doing more like 70 crunches) but still, I love this!

Won't you join me?

Please note, I did NOT create this plan/calendar.  I take NO credit and claim no copyright.  I found this on Tone and Fit.  I do, however, take all credit for finishing it :)

What I Think About: Knowing When to be DONE (advice ladies!)

A funny thing happens to people who have same sex children.  A couple of friends, for example, have two daughters and people always ask, "are you going to try for a boy?"  I'm sure this happens with people who have boys too.

In fact, one of things I love about one of my fave bloggers--Shell at Things I Can't Say--is that she states "Mom to three boys.  Not trying for a girl."  Do you hear that?  She has 3 boys and calls that a family? Sheesh.  What's wrong with her? ;)

For me, I have a boy and a girl so no one asks me this question.  People just assume this is the "ideal" family make up so why screw it up now? Right?

Families look so different. Some people are happy with one.  Some people want 19.  My thought is, how do you know when you are done?

When I was young{er} I had this grand vision of 4-5 children.  I'm a teacher; I love kids.  But then I had a hideous pregnancy followed by a traumatic c-section and all of a sudden that 4-5 went to three.  MAX.  Trust me, being sawed in half three times is my limit.

Then baby #2 (the often-coveted son ... remind me why this is so?) came along after a delightful pregnancy where I was all but prescribed a diet of whole-fat ice cream but another c-section.  Suddenly that magical 3 number seemed all wrong.

Holding this baby in my arms I just felt like I was finished.  Our family felt complete.

My son will be 3 in May and I still do not have a desire for another baby.  4 of my closest friends all had/got newborns this past fall/winter and while I loved holding and snuggling those little treasures, I am all too happy to give them back to their moms.  Just last Friday night I watched one of those babies, 7 week old baby girl H.  I swaddled and rocked and cuddled and fed.  And I looked at my husband and stated, "if this was it--if this holding and kissing was it--I'd have another in a heart beat!"

But the truth is that holding and cuddling isn't it.  Having a baby is hard work.  Babies change everything.  You need more gear, a bigger car, and more stamina to work full time with your other kids while running on something like 45 minutes of sleep.  Being a mom is tough.

I don't want to sound selfish but I just feel done.  I feel done with not sleeping through the night.  I feel done with sore breasts and smelling like spit up.  I feel done with putting my budding career on the back burner.  I feel done with diapers and spilled sippy cups and 3 am pacifier hunting.

Don't get me wrong, I love and adore my children.  One smile from them makes everything worth it but in the end, I'm not sure another child is best for our family.

So I'm on the birth control pill--again--which I promised my mother I'd never do.  I just don't know what else to do.  I don't want to count days (I'm not good at math so I know that method will get me child #3).  Matt and I have contemplated permanent fixes but those just don't feel right either.  I'm mean, we are 99.9% certain we are done but that .1% keeps us from taking drastic steps.

I'm so confused.  I feel done.  I feel like our family is just right for us.  But I'm not ready to take any drastic steps so every month as the arrival of Aunt Flo nears I have these panic attacks of "what if."  I don't want to feel that way.

What I think is that I'm done having children but I'm confused how done I am.  I'd love your advice!

Are you done?  How did you know? I love participating in Shell's PYHO on Wednesdays!

Days of Play: Show me the money!

Learning about money is inevitable so you might as well start now.

Go on a coin hunt and find change from around the house.  Look in pockets, couch cushions, etc.  Give a high five to the person who finds a coin in the most random place.

Now, have your children sort the coins based on how they look (color and size).   Create a chart and make down how many of each coin you have.

Give your child a piece of paper and let him/her draw what the coins look like.

Tell your child what the coins names are and how much they are worth.

Now, put the coins in a bank :)

Music Monday: Walk The Moon

For my birthday Matt got me tickets to the sold out Young the Giant show in Denver.  I nearly died.  But I didn't which is good because it'd be a real shame to die BEFORE seeing one of your current band obsessions live ... right?

One more total side note--Cough Syrup by Young the Giant was featured on Glee (Blain was singing it while Krofsky attempted suicide).  So happy to hear that song and SO happy with that episode.  I continue to love Glee.

I was going somewhere with this.  Where?

Um ... oh ya, the concert.  Okay, so this cool indie-rock band opened for Young the Giant.  The band was called Walk the Moon.  They were so freaking amazing.  I've never expected so much awesomeness from Ohio (because let's face it, Glee--although based in Ohio--isn't actually about Ohio).  Walk the Moon did not disappoint.  Having a great opening band before the band you actually paid to see is sort of a bonus.

Anyhow, here is Anna Sun--a song symbolizing youth.  Crazy random video. It makes me happy.

Things I Love: Dessert for Breakfast (that's healthy)

I'm pretty sure I've already blogged about my smoothie obsession.

Well today, I'm confessing: I found a new recipe and the obsession has gotten epically worse.

I couldn't be happier.

So this great little smoothie is loaded with vitamins, protein, and chocolate.  Yep chocolate.

Did I mention it's totally vegan?

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

What you need (per smoothie):

  • 1 T ground flax seed
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 T peanut butter (almond butter, sunflower seed butter)--More or less to taste
  • 1 c. chocolate almond milk (can also use plain almond, soy, or coconut milk and add 1T cocoa powder)
  • 1 handful of fresh spinach (what?? trust me--you get all the nutrient benefits without the taste!)
  • 1/5 cube of silken tofu (hello protein)
What to do:

In a blender, combine flax seed, almond milk, and tofu.  Blend a few seconds.  Add in peanut butter, banana, and spinach.  Blend again.  Add in ice.  Blend.  Pour into a glass.  Drink.

Why do I blend in batches?  Mainly because my blender is not awesome and will give up if I put too much stuff in at once.  Can you throw all this into one blender and have at it?  Sure, if your blender is awesome you can.  But don't brag about it because no one likes a braggart.  Ha!

Ice or frozen fruit?

Okay, there are people who swear that using ice in a smoothie ruins them.  I'm not one of those people. I love ice :)  But if you are anti-ice, then use frozen bananas--the result will be a creamy, cold delicious breakfast that tastes like dessert.

What I Think About: Sexpresso

Yesterday my husband sent me a link to a news article to read. (<--Click that link to see the article) In it, he called this a "possible business venture."  So, I clicked the link and behold, a scantily clad Le Cafe owner is causing a problems because she likes to serve drinks in barely there outfits (FYI--There is ZERO possibility in this being a business venture for me!).

Here's one of the tamer offending outfits.
Anyhow, this cafe owner is practically becoming a celebrity in her neck of the Italian woods ... but not every one is happy about it.  And when I say "every one," I mean women.  In fact, the women in her refusing to let their partners go to Le Cafe for a drink.

This sort of news story always gets me.

For starters, how is this news again?  I mean, she's wearing more clothing than women on the beach AND she's 34 which isn't under age so I don't get why this is such a shock.  Plus, she does work in a bar (which is not exactly a beacon of morals to begin with).  So we have dirty politics, inflation, unemployment, war, disease, poverty, and a sexy bar maid.  How is this news again?

Secondly, really?  I mean on one hand you have to give this woman some credit.  Talk about brilliant advertising.  But on the other hand, does a "really" brilliant and successful woman have to show her breasts to be successful?  I don't know.  Let's ask Hillary Clinton, Irene Rosenfeld (CEO of Kraft) or my mother.  Yes, I do think I could get some sort of skeezy business off the ground in my town if I hired young, ample breasted women to strut their stuff but in the end, I prefer to be successful based on my hard work and abilities.  Not my ass{ets}.

I could insert some sort of diatribe here on the sexualization of women but I won't.  I'll save that for a whole other week.  Stay tuned (and you're welcome).

Finally, I love the power play of women folk not letting their menfolk go to this bar.  I guess this is on par with not letting your man go to a strip club.  Or walk past a Victoria's Secret store.  Or go to the beach.  Or turn on the TV. Or watch a movie.  Aren't there half-naked women everywhere?  I'd feel like a real hypocrite saying, "you can't get a beer from a girl in a low cut shirt but how about we go to Cabo--even though that means we'll be sharing the sand with 20-somethings in thongs ..."

What I think is that if Matt wanted to go to this place I would NOT go with him.  But I wouldn't fight him on it either.  I guess I'm lucky that I married the sort of guy who does not go to Hooters because HE thinks it is degrading.  But would I ban?  Nope.  I have enough confidence in him and our marriage to know that one barmaid's breasts aren't going to ruin anything.

What do you think?  Would your let your significant other go to this bar? Are the women jealous or on the right track?

Days of Play: Patterns

Preschool and kindergarten children really work hard on creating, identifying, and extending patterns.  Even adults do this, to a great extent.  Think about the pattern you notice in your checkbook when you go to Starbucks too often or the pattern you notice when your child doesn't get enough sleep.

Patterns are everywhere.  Help your child recognize, create, and extend them.

Activity #1

Find patterns in your house.  Go on a "pattern hunt" and try to find patterns on clothing, blankets, painting, games, etc.

Activity #2

Create a pattern.  Gather objects of all sizes (buttons, coins, water/soda/juice lids, pasta shells, etc. and make a pattern.

Describe your pattern to your child and let your child describe his/her pattern to you.

Create a pattern and have your child extend it (or continue the pattern for you).

Extend your child's pattern.

Music Monday: Panic! At the Disco

I only know two types of people: the people who think Panic! is brilliant and the people who think Panic! sucks the joy out of life.

I'm not sure why this band seems to inspire such passionate love or passionate hate but they do.  Lucky for me, I'm on the love side.  I think Panic! is one of the most underrated bands.

Last summer I was supposed to go to a Panic! concert but instead I got to spend time with the sinister knife man and my husband's friend went to the concert.  Rats.  He did buy me a T-shirt but I feel like a total impostor wearing it.  You should only wear concert T-shirts to concerts you've attended (unless retro).  It's a rule.

Did you not know that rule?  Sheesh.  Amateur ...

Without further ado, my beloved Panic!

Friday Fashion: For the Fellas

I know some folks have partners who aren't into fashion.

That is NOT my partner.  In fact, Matt happens to be a better dresser than I am AND he buys me amazing clothes and accessories.  I love that my husband has such great taste (especially when it comes to choosing a life partner ....).

Anyhow, here are some fashion trends for the fellas.  Seriously, most of these make me think:

Things I Love: Closed Roads

I woke up this morning to closed roads.

Shoot.  Now I can't commute to work and school.

Darn it.  Now I have to go to a play date at the mall.

And while I'm there I'm going to be forced into buying this cute little sweater dress (for $12).  I might even twist my arm and go to the fabric store so I can re-cover some throw pillows.

Of course on days like this someone is bound to make me drink hot cocoa and to read a book.  Oh, and I'm guessing I'll have to play with my son and read "Wolf's Coming" for the 9,825 time since yesterday.

Darn those closed roads ...

What I Think About: 10 Foods Kids Need

Top 10 Healthy Foods for Growing Kids

The best way to get kids to eat healthy foods is to serve them a healthy diet from birth. Although it may seem difficult to come up with healthy foods that kids will like, here is a list of ten foods that most kids enjoy. These foods are high in fibre, low in saturated fats, and contain lots of vitamins and minerals that will help them to grow up strong and healthy.

 1. Milk – From birth, babies and toddlers love milk. But as they get older, many kids drink less milk in favour of sugary soda or juice. But milk is a healthy source of calcium, vitamin D, and protein that helps them build strong bones. Unless they have a milk allergy, kids should have at least 2 glasses of milk a day – for example, one with cereal and another to complement their lunch or dinner.

 2. Apples – Apples are a great healthy snack, full of vitamin C and fibre. Kids love them because they are juicy and sweet, yet they are low in calories. However, don’t be tempted to replace a whole apple with applesauce or apple juice, as these can contain more sugar and less fibre.

 3. Peanut Butter – Peanut butter is a good source of protein that can go in a sandwich or serve as a dip for apples or celery. Although it is high in fat, the fat found in peanut butter is unsaturated, which isn’t as bad as the saturated fats found in many processed foods. You can also purchase peanut butter with reduced fat or added vitamins.

 4. Yogurt – Along with milk, yogurt is another healthy dairy product that kids love. Avoid yogurts targeted at kids, because these often contain extra sugar. Instead, choose low-fat yogurt with “love active cultures” to help your children’s digestive systems.

 5. Tuna Fish – Tuna fish is a good source of vitamins, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids, which help brain development. Although some parents may be concerned about mercury contamination, tuna fish is fine to eat in moderation – perhaps once or twice a week.

 6. Cereal – Breakfast cereals can provide your children with many vitamins and minerals to start the day. Instead of sugary cereals, choose cereals that are made with whole grains. You can even add some chopped fruit to your child’s cereal for extra nutrition.

 7. Eggs – Eggs are another healthy breakfast choice. They contain lots of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Although they do contain cholesterol, they are not high in saturated fat, which is the main factor that raises cholesterol levels. Eating eggs every other day is a healthy choice.

 8. Carrots – It’s hard to get kids to eat vegetables when they’re young, but many kids like carrots because of the fun colour and sweet taste. They are also high in fibre, vitamins A and C, and potassium.

9. Oatmeal – Oatmeal is a good breakfast food and a healthy snack ingredient. It’s best to have traditional oatmeal rather than the quick-cook kind with added sugar, as it contains more fibre. You can always add honey, peanut butter, or fruit to a bowl of oatmeal. Oatmeal can also be used to make healthy cookies or snack bars.

 10. Sunflower Seeds – When kids are old enough to eat seeds without choking, sunflower seeds are a healthy snack for them to enjoy. They are high in fibre and contain lots of iron, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E.

What I Think is that our children deserve the best foods we can offer.  Help them eat healthy by offering wise snack options.

Days of Play: More or Less

Number recognition is important for kids in preschool and elementary school.  This game helps children identify numbers AND determine if a number is "more" or "less".

All you need to play is a deck of cards with face cards removed.

Deal the cards so each person has the same amount.  Now, count to three and flip the cards over.  Have your child tell you what cards are faced up (a 6 and a 2, for example).  Once your child has identified the numbers, ask which is more (a 6) and which is less (a 2).

If you want this to be a competition, decide that whoever has the "more" card takes the pile.  At the end, count who has the most cards and that person "wins."

To make this easier for younger children:

  • count together
  • play red/black to help them identify colors
To make this harder for older children:
  • Have children add the cards together
  • Have children subtract the cards
  • Have children multiply/divide the cards
  • Have children turn cards into fractions (add a 1 over the card so 2 becomes 1/2 and 8 becomes 1/8).  Then determine which card is more/less.
Whatever you do, have fun.  So many kids have math anxiety; this is a great way to encourage a love of math!

Music Monday: The Naked and Famous

Clearly this post has nothing to do with me.  Seriously, being naked and famous are two states of being to which I never aspire.  If I could shower fully clothed without being deemed worthy of a straight jacket, I totally would.

The Naked and Famous (again, not me) are an indie band from New Zealand.  Complete side note, my husband would love to move to New Zealand because of the lack of snakes.  He's so afraid of snakes he'd move to another country.  Actually, he's so afraid of snakes that if he was out watering trees at his parents house with his girlfriend of a year and a bull snake came slithering along, he'd throw said girlfriend toward the snake and take off running and screaming into the house.  But that's a whole different story. And I still married him :)

Off topic . . .  again.

The Naked and Famous--what can I say?  Great music!  Listen.  Love.  Buy!

Young Blood (Super popular right now!)

Punching In a Dream

 Girls Like You (my fave!)

If you are a Naked and Famous fan and you live in Colorado then you should know that The Naked and Famous will be performing in Denver. If you buy me a ticket I'll be your concert friend. I'll even let you buy me a concert T.

Friday Fashion: Color Trend Alert!

As I plunk away at my Mac keys my town is under a winter storm watch.  Brrrr.  As such, I've decided to do something entirely optimistic on my part ...  Think about Spring.

Spring (n.)--God's way of reminding us He makes all things new.

Honestly, I prefer Fall and Winter {gasp} but Spring is just so positively ... springy.  One can't help but look forward to new shoots of green grass reaching upwards to the sun and robins announcing sunrise from the tree branches.  New beginnings--it's like a breath of fresh air after leaving a smoke shop.

Enough of the poetics (I know I had you at "smoke shop").

All this "it's almost spring" thinking inspired me to share this spring's color trend alert.  Are you ready for this?

It's sea foam green and coral!  (does this remind anyone else of 1990?  Oh good.)

Coral is bold without being garish.  Sea foam is pretty and pastel without being preschool.  Worn separately with neutrals, this is a surprise splash of color.  Worn together, it's a little bit of heaven.

Things I Love: A Long, Hot Shower

I am not one of those gals who showers first thing in the morning.

I save my shower for the end of the day.

I practically scald my body with water as hot as I can stand.

And I stand there.  Sometimes for five minutes; sometimes for thirty.

I let the water finger through my hair and un-knot my back.  I let my mind wander--in prayer--in praise--in imaginative talk and dreaming.

This is my me time.

This is where I do my best thinking.

When the steam fills up the bathroom and the scent of milk and almond body scrub permeates my nostrils, my soul is restored.

I'm a long, hot shower girl.

What's your guilty pleasure?

What I Think About: "That's So Gay"

When I taught, my classroom was filled with middle school aged children.  For some people, that raises the hair on your neck and you just audibly gagged and now you are thinking about nominating me for sainthood.  I know middle school kids aren't for everyone but I LOVE that age group.  I think it has something to do with me being incredibly awkward; I tend to fit right in.

One thing I can't stand about this group is the name-calling.  I know little kids call names.  I mean, just the other day my son called me, "Poo poo butt."  Ouch.  In middle school (and sadly, a bit younger) the names are getting meaner.  Bitch.  Slut.  Dyke.  Lesbo.

Now I'm sure all of us would give our kids a good talking to if they said one of those words.  But how many parents do you see challenging their kids not to say, "that's so gay!"?  Not many.  Right now, "gay" and "that's so gay" are terms used synonymously with "lame" and "stupid."  Regardless of what the term is a stand in for, it is a heterosexist slur--on par with calling women "bitches," the differently abled "retarded," and African Americans "the N word".

Is this harmless?  No!  According to GLSEN school atmospheres are filled with anti-gay harassment and 90% of students hear "gay" used in a derogatory manner.  So even though gay is NOT a synonym for stupid, lame, awful, ugly ... the word is used.  What then is a student who is gay supposed to think?  That s/he is stupid, awful, lame, or ugly? (Want more?  Read this article.)

"That's so gay" might sound harmless but for the student who is a sexual minority (or has a family member or friend who is) it is a hurtful phrase.  Sure it sounds "nicer" that dyke, fag, lesbo, and homo but the fact remains--you are calling a minority group stupid.  It's time to stop.

What I think is that the common phrase "that's so gay" is NOT okay.  Whenever I hear "that's so gay" I think, "that's so kid whose parents didn't love him/her enough to teach him/her to be respectful."

Days of Play: Since it's Valentine's Day ...

You might as well go ALL out to let your kids know how much they are loved.

Now I'm posting this a bit too late for a "whole day" event but maybe you could plan this for dinner (who doesn't love breakfast for dinner?) or an after school snack.

First, cut out little paper hearts and write silly sayings/compliments on them.   Have your children go on a "heart hunt" and collect them all.  Read them together; share special stories about how unique and wonderful your kids are!

Photo from Our Best Bites

Next, sit down and share a meal.  This could be breakfast.  It could be dinner.  Either way, it will be delicious!

Serve heart-shaped pancakes with strawberry syrup.  Make scrambled eggs (you could just do whites, add a drop of red food coloring and make pink(ish) eggs.  Add food coloring to make pink milk.  Or whip up some smoothies.

Photo from Our Best Bites

Finally, give your children a small gift--bonus points if you make the gift AND it encourages family togetherness!

Pinterest has a million ideas.  My faves:

Music Monday:

Chiptune.  Ever heard of it? Basically it's music based off of old video game soundcards.  Neat-o, huh?

What do you get when you mix a little rock-n-roll with chiptunes?  I Fight Dragons.

The Dragons are composed of 5 guys from Chicago with enough snark to make you smile and tunes catchy enough to start you car dancing.  Oh, and their website totally looks like an arcade game.  (If you want to see what I mean, click that link).

Anyhow, I Fight Dragons (come on--you have to admit that names makes you feel kick a$$!) plays on my fave radio station and I kinda can't get enough of them.  Take a listen.

First up, The Geeks Will Inherit the Earth (I have some anecdotal evidence that proves this title is pretty much TRUE.

Next, The Faster The Treadmill

Finally, KABOOM!

So, are you sold on Chiptunes?  You gotta admit, it's awesomely unique!

What I Think About: The R Word

Ever think about the words you use?  Everyday we use words that are actually unacceptable and if we thought about what they really meant, I think we'd be appalled that we used them.

Take "retarded," for example.  How many times have you said, "I'm so retarded" or "that's retarded" without thinking about what you are really saying?

Have you ever worked with someone who was, by societal factors, deemed "retarded?"  If so, then you know what a horrible and hurtful putdown this word is.  And if you've seen someone called "retarded" then you know that "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" is nothing but a LIE!

Words hurt.  They cut, jab, stab, and leave spirits bleeding.  Yet people say it anyway because "everyone says it." Did you get that reasoning?  We keep saying something because everything is saying it?  This circular argument is illogical.  And this word, is hurtful.

Now, the second I suggest we stop saying things like "retarded" peoples' defenses go up and they fight back that this is all "politically correct garbage."  This has nothing to do with being politically correct.  Is has everything to do with being decent, educated human beings.  If you can't think of ways to share your thoughts and feelings without degrading others then I'd like to make a suggestion.  Don't talk.  Seriously, if you can't speak intelligently without using a slur, then do what my 6 year old suggests: "zip it, lock it, and put it in  your pocket."

The Bible refers to the tongue as a powerful weapon so next time you want to use some slang, think twice, get a thesaurus, and re-word!

Thank you Glee!
